10 Essential Items to Bring on Your RV Rental Trip – Don’t Forget!

RV travel is an exciting way to explore the open road, offering flexibility and the comfort of a home on wheels. Whether you’re a seasoned road warrior or embarking on your first RV adventure, being well-prepared can make all the difference. Here’s a list of 10 essential items you absolutely need for a successful RV rental trip.

1. Safety Gear

First Aid Kit: This is non-negotiable. A well-stocked first aid kit can be a lifesaver in emergencies. Mine includes bandages, antiseptics, pain relievers, tweezers, and even a snake bite kit. I remember once, while hiking in the Rockies, I took a tumble and scraped my knee pretty badly. Having that first aid kit made all the difference.

Emergency Road Kit:  Jumper cables, a tire repair kit, and reflective triangles are must-haves. A portable air compressor is also handy. On a trip to Yellowstone, our RV battery died. Thankfully, we had jumper cables and managed to get back on the road quickly.

Fire Extinguisher: Fires can happen, especially when cooking in tight quarters. Make sure your RV is equipped with a fire extinguisher and everyone knows how to use it. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

2. Navigation Tools

GPS Device or App: While modern RVs often come with built-in GPS, having a reliable navigation app on your smartphone is a great backup. Google Maps or Waze are excellent choices. On one trip through the winding roads of the Pacific Northwest, our RV’s GPS lost signal, but our trusty app saved the day.

Paper Maps: Technology can fail, and cell service can be spotty in remote areas. Having paper maps of your route and destination is a smart backup plan. I’ve found myself grateful for a paper map more times than I can count, especially in places like Death Valley.

3. Comfort and Bedding

High-Quality Sleeping Bags or Bedding: Good sleep is essential. Invest in comfortable sleeping bags or bring your own bedding from home. On one particularly cold night in the Grand Canyon, my sleeping bag kept me warm when the temperature dropped unexpectedly.

Pillows and Extra Blankets: Don’t underestimate the power of a good pillow. Extra blankets are great for added warmth or for sitting outside around the campfire.

4. Cooking Essentials

Portable Grill or Stove: A portable grill or stove offers the versatility to cook outside. I love using my compact propane grill for barbecues.

Cookware Set: A basic set of pots, pans, and utensils is crucial. Look for non-stick options that are easy to clean. A collapsible colander and nesting bowls can save space.

Food Storage Containers: Keep your food fresh and organized with airtight containers. They are great for leftovers and can double as mixing bowls.

5. Personal Care Items

Toiletries: Bring biodegradable soap, toothpaste, and other personal care items. Wet wipes are also handy for quick cleanups. I always pack a small mirror and a nail clipper – you’d be surprised how often they come in handy.

Towels: Quick-dry towels take up less space and dry faster than regular towels. Perfect for the RV lifestyle.

Portable Shower: If your RV doesn’t have a built-in shower, a portable shower can be a game-changer.

6. Clothing and Footwear

Weather-Appropriate Clothing: Layering is key. Pack for varying conditions, as weather can change rapidly. In one day, I’ve experienced sun, rain, and snow in the mountains of Colorado. Lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics are great for all conditions.

Comfortable Footwear: Sturdy, comfortable shoes are a must for hiking and exploring. Flip-flops or slippers are great for lounging around the RV.

Rain Gear: A good rain jacket and waterproof shoes can keep you dry and comfortable during unexpected showers. Trust me, hiking in wet clothes is no fun.

7. Entertainment and Relaxation

Books, Games, and Hobbies: Bring your favorite books, board games, or hobbies to enjoy during downtime. I always pack a couple of my favorite novels and a deck of cards. On rainy days, we’ve had some epic card games inside the RV.

Outdoor Chairs and Table: Creating a comfortable outdoor space is a must. Folding chairs and a portable table can turn any campsite into a cozy living area. I love sitting outside in the evening with a cozy cup of tea, watching the sunset.

8. Cleaning Supplies

Multi-Purpose Cleaner: Keep your RV clean with a good multi-purpose cleaner. It’s great for countertops, tables, and even windows.

Trash Bags: Maintaining cleanliness is important, especially in nature. Bring plenty of trash bags and always pack out what you pack in. I keep a small bin by the door to make it easy.

Broom and Dustpan: A compact broom and dustpan are essential for keeping the RV tidy. Sand and dirt can quickly accumulate, especially if you’re spending time outdoors.

9. Tech & Gadgets

Portable Power Bank: Keeping your devices charged is crucial, especially for navigation and emergency calls. A high-capacity power bank can charge multiple devices.

Camera or Smartphone: Capture memories of your trip. Whether it’s a high-quality camera or your smartphone, don’t forget your charger and extra memory cards.

Mobile Hotspot: Staying connected in remote areas can be a challenge. A mobile hotspot can provide internet access where cell service is limited. It’s been a lifesaver for checking weather updates and staying in touch with family.

10. Food and Water Supplies

Non-Perishable Food Items: Stock up on easy-to-make meals like pasta, rice, canned beans, and soups. Granola bars and trail mix are great for snacks.

Reusable Water Bottles: Staying hydrated is crucial. Bring reusable water bottles to reduce waste. A large, refillable water jug is also great for keeping the RV stocked with clean water.

Water Filter or Purifier: Ensure safe drinking water by bringing a water filter or purifier. It’s especially important if you’re camping in remote areas without access to clean water sources.

Being well-prepared for an RV trip can make all the difference between a stressful experience and an unforgettable adventure. By packing these essential items, you’ll be ready to tackle whatever the road throws your way.
